The utility room is known for storing key essentials from the kitchen such as the washing machine, tumble dryer and laundry. They can also be used as a storage room and a secondary space if some things won’t fit into your kitchen.
The word “utility” refers to a term of an item which is designed for usefulness or practical use. This phrase is more commonly used in British English, wherein North American English, it is referred to as a laundry room. Older generations often think that the term ‘utility room’ is a fancy name for a scullery, and they are right.
They are a necessity for most people and their homes, and even offer more space for pet bowls, muddy boots and shoes and a big sink for washing items. They will make life easier if planned carefully and take the stress out of dealing with the day to day chores more pleasurable.
Utility rooms are definitely worth considering if you want to keep the rest of your home pristine, especially if you have children or pets. Planning for one is to make sure it’s both practical and suitable for your needs.

At the Handmade Kitchen Company, we can create your dream utility room, that is organised well and styled in your choice of colour.
Below we take a look at some of the utility rooms we have designed and hand-built in many of our client’s homes.
We designed and built a very impressive utility room for our client in Hadley Wood. The cabinets are our popular classic shaker style with an in-frame door and drawer with beaded front frame and hand-painted in a two-tone colour scheme, consisting of Juniper Ash 115 and French Grey 113 both from Little Greene Paint Company. This shot is of the laundry station where the washing machine and tumble dryer sit around a large farmhouse butler sink.
Carrying on from the above picture, this shot shows an additional handmade cabinet and open-shelving for outdoor wear and dirty washing in this spectacular laundry room. This room is extra special as it has access to the outdoors, so it’s the perfect room for high-traffic.
Floor-to-ceiling bespoke traditional cabinetry fills this utility perfectly with cutouts for the integrated appliances. The cupboards act as larders filled with many kitchen essentials. This certainly is a multi-functional space perfect for the whole family in this home in Potters Bar. The units are hand-painted in Blackened by Farrow & Ball, which is a timeless style matching our client’s personal touch.
We designed and fitted out a utility/walk-in pantry below to a property in Potters Bar. It exceeds all expectations of how a utility room should be, becoming one of the most useful spaces in the home. Filled with floor-to-ceiling cabinets and many storage solutions it makes an inviting space to collect the cooking ingredients for that delicious meal. White appliances fill the room down one side for the perfect laundry area, while a hardworking floor has been chosen for the high volume of traffic and muddy paws from the family dog. In amongst the cabinets, there was even enough space for a huge wine fridge. The cabinets have been hand-painted in Dove Tale by Farrow & Ball, a light grey hue.
