What is the difference between curved and straight cabinetry we ask ourselves? When it comes down to the kitchen design the choice of having curves or straight lines will play a huge role in the layout, functionality and overall feel of the space. Each design has its own perks and creates different environments. If your space will allow it, will you have both?
The kitchen below features both curved and straight cabinetry. Our client in Broxbourne wanted to make the island a feature and a stunning focal point as soon as you enter the room. This was done by adding a curved edge to the front of the island with a storage cupboard and breakfast bar made from granite – Cosmic Black.
The rest of the kitchen is completed with straight-line cabinetry that fills the space perfectly.
Curved cabinetry
Curved cabinetry is designed to create a relaxing space. It consists of no sharp edges, but a beautiful flow that catches the eye. This type of style is stylish, practical and ergonomic which is perfect for a family home. Little ones are protected as there are no sharp hard edges and small, awkward spaces are filled perfectly. The soft lines that create the curve will open up any room and create an illusion of space.
This type of design is becoming a popular choice where they are well suited to open-plan living areas and can be attractive focal points on islands and dressers. The soft appearance blends well with other zones and welcomes families to spend time together.
A curved cabinet is relatively new as they were a preserve of a contemporary home, but with many period properties changing too much more modern designs, curves are complementing them in the most wonderful way.
Curves can be a bit more expensive than standard units due to the extra craftsmanship that is needed. But there is a plus side as they can be more subtly incorporated to a lower cost if they were to be designed at the end of the main kitchen run or an island.
This handmade bar we designed and built for our client in Bishop’s Stortford features our classic shaker with curved edges that offers sophistication to this stunning room. Glass-fronted cabinets fill either side, while the bottom cabinets are solid with a beaded front frame.
Straight lined cabinetry
Straight lined cabinetry is more of a traditional style that allows the kitchen to be fully functioning and space-saving. This type of cabinet design utilises the space for higher functionality and maximises the storage options that are available with reasonably sized and shaped cupboards and cabinets. Perfect for narrow and smaller spaced kitchens that don’t have a lot of room.
It may not offer the most modern kitchen style in the home, but it does allow for modern features that can be added for a sleek and sophisticated look.
