The island is often the heart of a bespoke kitchen: the place where people gather, where the cooking happens and where the cabinetry has the most to say. Our hand-built kitchen islands are designed around your space, your storage needs and the way you actually entertain, with thoughtful integration of seating, appliances and feature lighting.

Designed Around How You Actually Use the Space

No two bespoke kitchen islands are the same. We design each one around how the room is used: for everyday family cooking, for casual breakfast seating, for relaxed entertaining, or for all of the above. Most island designs combine a generous prep worktop, an integrated hob and downdraft extractor, deep drawer banks, and seating along one or two faces.

The shape changes with the room. Rectangular islands suit galley layouts and longer rooms; L-shape and T-shape islands define zones in open-plan spaces; double islands work in the largest country kitchens. We hand-build in classic in-frame Shaker, modern handleless, or a deliberate mix of the two.

Practical features we often include

  • Integrated seating: a curved pedestal table, banquette nook or breakfast bar overhang
  • Hob and downdraft: a Wolf induction hob with a NEFF or BORA downdraft extractor
  • Deep drawer storage: dovetail-jointed solid hardwood drawers for pans, crockery and utensils
  • Feature lighting: a statement pendant or trio of pendants above
  • Contrasting paint colour: islands often work beautifully in a darker shade against paler perimeter cabinetry
  • Integrated wine cooler or warming drawer: Sub-Zero, Wolf, Caple or NEFF

Frequently Asked Questions

How big should a kitchen island be?

There’s no single answer; we design each island to suit the room. As a general guide, you need at least 1m of clear floor on every side, and ideally 1.2m where appliances open. Our smallest islands are around 1.4m by 0.9m; large country-kitchen islands can extend to 3.5m by 1.3m with integrated seating.

Can my kitchen island include the hob and sink?

Yes, both. We usually recommend a hob with a downdraft extractor rather than an overhead hood for visual cleanness. We can also integrate a prep sink, a wine cooler, a warming drawer or a pop-up power socket within the island worktop.

What worktop materials work for a busy island?

Quartz, granite, marble-effect porcelain and solid timber all work well. We typically recommend quartz or porcelain for the hardest-working surfaces, with a contrasting timber section for casual seating or food prep.

Can the island be a different colour from the rest of the kitchen?

Absolutely. A darker island (often Farrow & Ball Railings, Hague Blue, Down Pipe or Studio Green) against a paler perimeter is one of the most popular looks. Two-tone schemes are a hallmark of contemporary bespoke design.

How long does a bespoke kitchen island take to build?

An island is built as part of your wider kitchen project, with a typical lead time of twelve to sixteen weeks from final design sign-off. Installation of the island specifically takes one to two days as part of the wider fit.
