Most people choose a kitchen with their eyes, thinking about the cabinetry colour, the veining in the worktop, the warmth of the timber, and the shape of the island. All of which matters, of course. But another sense quietly shapes how it feels to live in a kitchen day after day, and almost nobody thinks about it until they are standing in the finished room: how it sounds.
A loud kitchen is a tiring kitchen: the clatter of a drawer slamming, the roar of an extractor you have to shout over, the hum of an appliance that carries through to the snug at nine in the evening. None of it ruins a kitchen, but when you add it all up and over years of daily use, it can be subtly stressful. By contrast, a quiet kitchen is calming in a way that is hard to put your finger on until you have lived in one. So we have put together this blog to show you how we design noise out of a handmade kitchen, detail by detail.
What Is a Quiet Kitchen?
A quiet kitchen is one where noise is engineered out at the drawing stage rather than fixed afterwards. In practice that means four things: soft-close hardware on every door and drawer, a remote or external extractor motor sited away from the cook, low-decibel appliances properly integrated into insulated cabinetry, and enough soft surfaces in the room to stop sound bouncing. Get these right together and the result is a calm room you can hold a conversation in.
Why Kitchens are Noisy in the First Place
To design noise out of the kitchen, it’s helpful to understand where it comes from. Broadly, kitchen noise falls into three groups.
First, there is mechanical noise: doors and drawers closing, cupboards being opened and shut, the percussive sound of cabinetry being used hundreds of times a day. Second, there is appliance noise: the extractor, the dishwasher, the fridge, the boiling-water tap, and the washing machine if the kitchen and utility share a wall. Third, and most overlooked, there is acoustic noise: the way sound bounces around a room full of hard surfaces, particularly in the large, open, hard-floored kitchens so many people now build.
Crucially, each of these is addressable at the design stage because it’s far harder to fix once the kitchen is in. That is precisely why we think about sound while we are still drawing.
Soft-Close Everything, and Why it Matters More Than You Think
Let’s start by mentioning the most obvious culprit: the slamming drawer and the banging cupboard door. The single most effective thing you can do for the everyday soundscape of a kitchen is to fit soft-close mechanisms to every door and every drawer, without exception.
Now, a good soft-close does not just stop the slam; it removes the sound entirely, so a drawer the size of a pan drawer, fully loaded, glides shut with nothing more than a faint, satisfying click. Moreover, quality hardware keeps doing it for decades, whereas budget mechanisms lose their damping within a few years, and the slamming creeps back. There’s a meaningful difference between the cheap soft-close hinges fitted as standard in volume kitchens and the high-quality runners and hinges we specify.
In practice, this is one of the clearest arguments for handmade over flat-pack. We use the same grade of hardware throughout the kitchen, on the pan drawers, the pantry, the utility and the pull-out bin, so the whole room behaves consistently. There is no jarring cupboard in the corner that someone fitted with a cheaper hinge.
Where the Extractor Lives, and How Loud it Has to be
With plenty of noise sources in the kitchen, the extractor is the one people complain about most after they move in. A powerful extractor running over an island while you are trying to hold a conversation across it is genuinely intrusive, and it is the reason so many people simply stop using theirs.
There are two ways to design out the noise. Rather than housing the motor in the hood directly above your head, use a remote or external motor, sited in a loft, an outbuilding or an external wall. The extraction power stays the same; the noise, however, is moved away from the cook. The difference at head height is dramatic.
The second is sizing the extraction correctly for the room. An undersized extractor running flat out at maximum power is far louder than a generously sized one running comfortably at half. Similarly, the ducting matters: short, smooth, well-sealed runs of rigid ducting are much quieter than long, kinked stretches of flexible hose, which whistle and rattle. The duct route is planned at the design stage, in coordination with your builder, precisely so the extractor can do its job quietly.
Appliances: The Noise You Live with Every Evening
Beyond the extractor, the rest of your appliances make a quieter but more constant contribution to the soundscape. The fridge hums, and then the dishwasher runs through the evening. When specifying or integrating appliances, we pay greater attention to the published noise ratings, measured in decibels, not just the headline features. Integration helps with noise, meaning an appliance built properly into insulated cabinetry, with the right gaps and seals, runs noticeably quieter than the same appliance standing in a gap.
What’s more, where the kitchen opens into a snug or sitting area, we think hard about which wall the noisiest appliances sit on. Putting the dishwasher and the fridge on the far side of the room from the sofa is a small, free decision at the drawing stage that pays back every single evening.
The Acoustics Nobody Plans For
A modern kitchen is, acoustically, a hard box filled with stone or timber floors, painted cabinetry, stone worktops, large windows and often a high or vaulted ceiling. Sound has nothing soft to land on, so it bounces, and the result is a room where every clink of glass and every scrape of a chair rings out and lingers.
This is exactly why a kitchen full of hard surfaces can feel louder than a smaller, softer room, even when nothing in it is actually making much noise. Thankfully, it is also one of the easiest things to soften, provided you think about it early.
Adding a window seat with a properly upholstered cushion helps absorb sound. So do curtains rather than blinds, a large rug in the seating zone, upholstered dining chairs rather than hard timber ones, and open shelving with books and ceramics on it rather than a flat painted wall. They all read as a comfortable room to be in, and that’s the whole point.
The Small Details That Add Up
There are some small details that each remove a little noise, and together make a real difference.
- Felt or buffer pads where the cabinet doors meet the frames
- Properly fitted drawer boxes that do not rattle
- Solid, well-jointed cabinetry that does not creak or flex under a heavy worktop
- A pull-out bin on quality runners
- Cutlery trays and pan dividers that stop everything inside a drawer from crashing together every time it opens
Individually, none of these is dramatic. Collectively, they are the difference between a kitchen that feels solid and considered and one that announces every single use.
