Handmade Curved Cabinetry

Kitchen furniture with curves create lots of visual interest within the space and helps to soften the linear lines of the design. Curves work in all kitchen shapes and sizes, cleverly using up all the space and creating an illusion. They are normally found in contemporary homes, but now they are a sought after style for traditional country and grand classic open-plan designs.

At The Handmade Kitchen Company, we love curves and believe that it makes the kitchen interesting and tells a different story. We have a few clients that have opted for this shape, which we will show you later on in the blog.

Our truly bespoke kitchens are lovingly crafted and installed over Hertfordshire, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Greater London and the Home Counties. We take pride in each and everyone and the build of your dream kitchen is a pleasure from start to finish.

Below, fitted within an 1800’s ex postal office, a unique Goblin green kitchen awaits in a double L-shaped layout wrapping around a wall. There was just enough space for a perfectly formed island with a curved end to add character and create a great little seating area.

Having a curved cabinet in the kitchen is particularly well suited to kitchen tables, breakfast bars and islands. An attractive focal point is formed especially if the room is open-planned and they help to create a soft appearance within the linear lines.

The island could be built up with straight lines to form a rectangle and rounded edges at either end to subtly soften the look, or it may be fully circular, depending on the space you have.

A royal blue open-plan kitchen sits below in Clayhall with a wonderful curved section on the island. This section is completely bespoke with a worktop beautifully masoned into the island. The perfect drink prep area has been created with circular storage below to store the mixers. Perrin & Rowe brass knobs and cup handles complete the cabinets with the Royal Blue by Little Greene hand-painted on soaking up the surroundings and portraying a creative space.

Inset skirting in a rounded shape finishes off the overall look making the cabinets appear to stand directly on the floor.

There are other ways to use curves in the kitchen and that’s on pantry cupboards and units surrounding the hob and sink areas.

We designed and handbuilt a bar in our Bishop’s Stortford project below. It features two solid front curved corner cabinets on either side at the bottom and two glass-fronted at the top that sits either side of the open shelving. The cabinets are hand-painted in Dove Tale by Farrow & Ball, topped with a quartzite known as Bianca Eclipsia to provide a luxurious hard-wearing surface.

Lots of people believe that having curved units will reduce the amount of storage space, however, this is not true as our bespoke designers ensure every inch can be utilised. Some kitchen essentials will fit in different, but this does not mean that they can’t go in that particular area.

The most impressive islands are a semicircle that goes around the cook with maybe a hob at the centre and preparation space on either side with plenty of storage.

The Hadley Wood project below features a luxurious island that is rectangular in shape with one end curved. It makes a lovely seating area as well as ideal storage solutions. The island becomes a statement piece in this home with its clean linear lines and dramatic lead grey hue.
