This is a first for us and we are sure it won’t be our last but for this impressive traditional art home in Hertfordshire, we designed and built two islands for the space each with different purposes. Because our client decided to improve their home instead of move the space was opened up to an extraordinary open-plan with existing walls and new walls and the two kitchen islands set in the middle zoning off each end of the room.
When it comes to the kitchen island there are many reasons why they are a great idea for the space. They can add extra functionality and storage to the whole room, as well as creating a divider between the different areas in an open plan. Large kitchens are made for an island, turning them into a great social space, but unfortunately for smaller kitchens, there just isn’t the space, however, a portable island could be possible.
Islands are on everyone’s dream kitchen wish list and many of us dream about those statement ones, whether they are long and slim running parallel to the main work area, or neat and round to fit within a smaller space. We can design and build any shape and sized island to suit your space and requirements.
- The island can be used to entertain guests or serve drinks.
- Preparing food. Add cooktops and sinks into the design to add functionality.
- Allow them to act as a divider providing a boundary between the cooking zone and living/dining area.
- Great for the children to help out or do their homework.
- Extra seating for the family at mealtimes.
The whole of the kitchen was hand-painted in Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball, which is a deep dark blue taking its name from the fantastically coloured woodwork much used by the Dutch. There are subtle hints of a green undertone that provides a timeless, deep and dramatic blue.
‘Butt’ hinges are seen on the furniture giving a nice traditional touch finished in polished chrome to match the statement handles. The cabinet fronts are flat framed with no bead, with the panels in-framed and shallow recessed as well as the plinths.
This first island closest to the outdoors is formed as the cooking area. A Miele induction hob in a sleek black finish with onset controls and 4 PowerFlex cooking areas sits on top, with many storage drawers and cupboards below.
One lovely feature we love on this particular island is the glass doors at the front showcasing our client’s favourite china.
The second island that is closest to the front of the house has been designed and built for prepping. Big chunky legs, a bottom full of wooden slats and convenient storage drawers on either side is what makes this island ready to cook that delicious meal. Prepare on the large work surface area and transfer a few feet away to the other island where the cooking can begin.
