The Concept Behind the Hidden Door Design

The hidden door design is so that the cabinets blend effortlessly into your existing cabinetry, providing a discreet entrance to your utility room. When the doors are closed, it appears to be an ordinary set of cabinets, but with a simple push or pull, a passageway is revealed taking you to another part of your home. Genius!

The Benefits of a Hidden Door & Secret Passage to Your Utility Room

It’s a beautiful seamless integration of cabinets and entrances to other rooms

The hidden door camouflages cabinets and ensures that your utility room entrance does not disrupt the visual flow of your space. This is particularly useful in open-plan designs or areas where aesthetic continuity is important.

Convenience is enhanced

Having direct access from the kitchen to the utility room simplifies everyday tasks. Moving laundry and cleaning supplies becomes a breeze, enhancing the overall efficiency of your family home.

Space is maximised

If you plan to disguise doors as cabinets, you effectively utilise space that might otherwise be wasted. This excellent solution is ideal for small or narrow areas where traditional doors might be impractical.

Enhance security and privacy with an added layer

A hidden door in the home can provide an added layer of security and privacy – less likely to attract attention. It allows you to conceal areas and keep them private if you prefer.

A unique design feature

This unique design feature adds an element of intrigue and sophistication to your home. Hidden doors can impress guests and add character to your living spaces.

How to create this look with your cabinets

First up is the planning and design of this unique feature.

  • Measure the area where you want the hidden door to be and there’s enough room for it to open and close smoothly.
  • Tie it in with the kitchen design, match the cabinetry and ensure that the hidden door blends seamlessly.

You now need to choose the right mechanism.

  • For a concealed look, use hidden hinges and ones that can support the weight of the door.
  • Push-to-open eliminates the need for visible handles, maintaining the illusion of regular cabinets and tying in with our handleless Mapesbury design.
  • Magnetic catches can help keep the door securely closed and provide a smooth, quiet operation.

How will it be built?

  • The door will be built from a sturdy frame to ensure stability and durability.
  • The cabinet panel will be attached to the door frame, making sure it aligns perfectly with the surrounding cabinetry.
  • The chosen hinges and mechanisms will be installed to ensure the door operates smoothly.

Last but not least the finishing touches

  • Hand-painted to the rest of the cabinets, and any other decorative elements added for seamless design.
  • The doors will be tested for functionality, ensuring that they open and close easily and that the design is not easily distinguishable from the other cabinets.

Traditional Mapesbury Essex Project

Charlotte @buildandstyle has a keen eye for detail and thought about adding hidden mystery to the home, and that is where the idea of a secret passageway came from, something that would be disguised within the kitchen cabinets. Being an organised and tidy individual, our client wanted to have a hidden door so that any mess could go straight into the utility and a larger sink was chosen for that purpose as well as for washing the dog.

As the door was so close to the kitchen, our client didn’t want to disrupt the room flow with a separate door and wanted it to match in some way. We as kitchen designers, suggested a secret door that blended in with the cabinetry perfectly, something we like is the top box as it brings the door the whole way up. The secret door was also designed to be completely in symmetry with the run of cabinetry with the finger-pull detail to open the door running in line too.

This part of the kitchen is where we find plenty of storage and the fridge freezer lies. The cabinets are designed into the wall for seamless integration and it looks absolutely beautiful.

Below is where the secret passageway leads to!
