What are the key features of my Handmade Traditional Shaker?

Sink: Your choice of ceramic farmhouse/butler style sink or a stainless steel undermounted style.

Worktop: Your choice of maintenance-free Quartz, a natural solid wood, a combination of Quartz & Wood, Granite or Corian.

Furniture: Traditionally crafted mortice and tenon jointed doors, dove tail drawer boxes. Doors with optional soft-close or traditional butt hinges, drawer boxes on soft close runners. The choice of a plain front frame or traditional half round cock bead fitted to the frame around each door & drawer.

Carcasses: Our carcasses are traditionally made from your choice of solid Pine with dove tail joints, solid Oak, Walnut veneer, Birch Ply or an Oak Veneer – as we offer a truly bespoke service.

Storage: Highly practical – Doors can be set on a drawer boxes, especially useful under your sink. The option to have an internal draw inside a deeper front drawer.

Paint: Your choice of colour in a quality durable paint.

What is a traditional Shaker kitchen?

A traditional Shaker kitchen takes the Shaker tradition and dresses it with the fuller country-house treatment: deeper mouldings, decorative pilasters and plinths, dresser units, plate racks, hand-painted in-frame cabinetry, butt hinges and traditional hardware. The look sits comfortably in listed cottages, Georgian and Victorian houses, country properties and large rural homes where you want a kitchen that feels at home with the architecture.

What is the difference between traditional, classic and modern Shaker?

Traditional Shaker is the fullest, with deep mouldings, dresser units, plate racks and a country-house aesthetic. Classic Shaker dials this back to a softer in-frame design with cock-bead detailing and a hand-painted finish. Modern Shaker simplifies further, often dropping the cock-bead, with cleaner monochrome palettes and (sometimes) handleless lower runs.

Will a traditional Shaker kitchen suit a modern home?

Yes, but with care. A traditional Shaker design can land beautifully in a new-build extension when paired with restrained colour, generous proportions and a single feature element (a dresser, a plate rack, a feature island). We will design the level of traditional detailing around your architecture and the wider style of your home.

What hardware is typical of a traditional Shaker kitchen?

Hand-forged or solid-brass knobs and cup handles in aged-brass, polished nickel, antique-bronze or chrome, paired with butt hinges and Belfast or butler sinks. We work most often with Armac Martin, Perrin & Rowe and selected smaller foundries for specific hand-forged pieces.

How long does a traditional Shaker kitchen take?

Most kitchens take twelve to sixteen weeks from final design sign-off, with installation typically two to three weeks on site. Listed cottages, manor houses and complex country-house projects can take longer, and we will plan around your wider building programme.

Where do you install traditional Shaker kitchens?

Our Bridgers Barn showroom is in Great Hallingbury near Bishop’s Stortford. We regularly install traditional Shaker kitchens across Essex, Hertfordshire and north London, with occasional projects further afield in Cambridge and the wider Home Counties. Recent projects include traditional country kitchens across the Hertfordshire and Essex commuter belt, plus listed cottages and period properties throughout the region.
